perspective
2014 - 2020

The Biała Tarnowska River Valley is an important regional and national ecological corridor. It connects Natura 2000 areas of alpine and continental ecoregions. It gives the possibility of spreading many species of plants and allows many animals to migrate. Its diversity and natural importance is evidenced by the fact that it has been included in the European Natura 2000 network.

For decades, river valleys have unfortunately been transformed, built up and partitioned off. This led to a disruption of water management – increasing the risk of floods and droughts. The degradation of valleys and channels has resulted in a reduction in the population or even the complete extinction of many species of aquatic organisms. Fifteen out of twenty-one species of fish living in Biała Tarnowska need access to rocky or gravel ground in order to develop and live. Beds with such a substrate occur in the upper part of the catchment area, but access to them is blocked by numerous thresholds and water steps located along the river course.

Therefore, measures are taken to eliminate or modernize these obstacles and restore the natural state of the riverbed fragments. As a result, the living conditions and the migration of fish will improve, but also the flood safety of the inhabitants will increase. The planned activities will also improve the natural and landscape values of the Biała valley, which will have a positive impact on the development of tourism and fishing.

The project covers the communes of: Uście Gorlickie, Grybów, Bobowa and Ciężkowice.
