Comprehensive flood protection in Żuławy - Stage II - Regional Water Management Authority in Gdańsk
The project implementation will contribute to the reconstruction and modernization of the flood protection system in Żuławy. This will be achieved by completing the following Project tasks:
Task 1. Reconstruction of regulatory structures on the Vistula – 19 spurs on the Żuławy section of the Vistula River. The project concerns the reconstruction of regulatory structures made in the second half of the 19th century from natural materials (stone, fascine), which also have a flood protection function. The above-mentioned spurs were built in order to achieve the designed depth and width of the Vistula regulatory route with medium navigable water. In addition, they concentrate its current, which results in the maintenance of adequate water depths in the river bed, ensuring free ice flow and efficient icebreaking. By moving the current away from the banks, they protect the embankments, and in places where the riverbed directly reaches the embankment, they provide its direct protection.
Task 2. Reconstruction of the Vistula estuary In order to obtain the required patency in the estuary section of the Vistula, it is assumed that model and “in-situ” tests will be carried out.
The following activities will be undertaken under the Project:
- Preparatory works:
- Field research defining the boundary conditions for numerical models;
- Bathymetric measurements at the mouth of the Vistula River from the Port of Świbno to the waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk;
- shoreline measurements;
- Numerical model studies determining the target length of the steering wheels
Task 3. Construction of storm gates on the Tuga river – a new facility to secure Nowy Dwór Gdański located on the Tuga river, together with the accompanying infrastructure. The task will consist in the construction of storm gates with accompanying infrastructure (near the mouth of the Tuga River to Szkarpawa), cutting off the Tuga from storm surge waters flowing from the Vistula Lagoon along the Szkarpawa River. The gates will close automatically during high water levels.
Task 4. Reconstruction of the Przegalina barrage The task is aimed at the renovation of locks along with the reconstruction of parking stands.
