Forest Gene Bank Kostrzyca is an important part of preservation of biodiversity in the Jelenia Góra Agglomeration – an integration of ex situ conservation in the gene bank with the botanical garden functions
Care for the environment in Lower Silesia comes down to two issues: care for the climate, as well as the conservation and protection of the environment and its resources. Since 1996 the Forest Gene Bank Kostrzyca has been in place in Miłków near Karpacz, gathering and storing seeds of the most valuable trees in the country, which is consistent with both these assumptions.
The project of Forest Gene Bank Kostrzyca consists of the botanical and technical part. In the first part, the preservation of the genetic resources of plant species from the most valuable forms of nature protection of the agglomeration of Jelenia Góra is provided, such as Peat Bogs of the Jizera Valley or Krokusy reserve in Górzyniec. The technical part, however, provides the creation of infrastructure for the functioning arboretum, in order to make the collection available to the public, also for people with motor disabilities. It will also encompass, among others, an educational playground, pergola, solar lighting network, as well as a water reservoir. The existing ponds will be cleaned and rebuilt, and the communication will be facilitated by wooden bridges.
