perspective
2014 - 2020

Breast Unit atthe Lower Silesian Oncology Centre in Wrocław is the largest hospital in the country built in modular system. Among others, the hospital unit with comfortable rooms for female patients (8 two-person rooms and 4 post-surgery observation stands) may be found there as well as a clinic with treatment and consultation rooms and diagnostic imaging unit as well as minimally invasive breast diseases unit. The centre is equipped with state of the art diagnostic equipment-among others, two digital mammography. It is estimated that 1,000 female patients will be examined here per year. The construction of the first in the region Centre of Breast Diseases will ensure comprehensive treatment of cancers.

-We have a unique team of specialists and modern equipment to support them. All we needed was a new facility-says Dr. Adam Maciejczyk, director of Lower Silesian Oncology Centre in Wrocław.

Patients find help at all stages of the disease: from diagnosis and consultation with a team of specialists, through operation, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, support of physiotherapist to check-ups after the entire therapeutic process. From the beginning, a team of specialists is involved: surgical oncologist, radiologist, clinical oncologist, radiation oncologist, pathomorphologist, physiotherapist and psychologist.

The concept of Breast Unit as a team specializing in diagnostics and therapy of breast cancer appeared at the end of the 70s of 20th century. The first centres of this type appeared in USA, Italy and Germany. Treatment in such a system increas chances for survival and increas the quality of life of female patients. Thanks to compliance with the elaborated guidelines by the Breast Unit, better therapeutic results are obtained (smaller mortality) and more women have a chance to avoid mastectomy. In Poland, centres of this type are only starting to appear.
