Deepening of approach fairway and internal water areas of the Port of Gdynia – stages I and III as well as reconstruction of wharves in the Port of Gdynia – stages II and III

beneficiary name

ZARZĄD MORSKIEGO PORTU GDYNIA S.A. [THE PORT OF GDYNIA AUTHORITY JOINT STOCK COMPANY]

The project consists of the following two tasks:

Task 1 “Deepening of approach fairway and internal water areas of the Port of Gdynia – Stages I and III”

The planned investment will be executed in three stages by two investors – the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. (Stages I and III) and the Maritime Office in Gdynia (Stage II which is not described below).

Stage I: Reconstruction of turntable no. 2 up to diameter of 480 m in the region of Basin IX and related building works arising from the necessity to move the floating dock of the Polish Navy Shipyard (SMW). To build the new turntable no. 2, it is necessary to demolish Pier no. III (Gościnne Wharf) along the section of approx. 240 m long and head of Pier no. II along the section of approx. 25 m long, on the premises of the Polish Navy Shipyard. The floating dock will be moved to the existing slip recess, located in the corner of the Southern II and Western Wharves. Due to characteristics of the existing building and designed dock basin, it will be required to completely reconstruct the existing recess with preservation of a similar schematic layout of the building only. Furthermore, performance of dredging works up to the ordinate of -13.50 m in the new area of the turntable.

Stage III: The performance of dredging works up to the ordinate of -16.00 m in the Port Channel and port water areas (increase of depth by 2.5 m from the present one: -13.5 m). Moreover, widening of the internal port entry from the side of Ostroga Oksywska (by approx. 20-50 m – on a variant basis). Owing to the considerable increase of depth in the Channel, it is also necessary to reconstruct wharves adjacent to the Channel, whose structures do not allow for such depth. The performance of dredging works up to the ordinate of -16.00 m may also require to reroute/secure cables and underwater pipelines.

Task 2 “Reconstruction of wharves in the Port of Gdynia – Stages II and III”

The planned project will consist of two stages:

Stage II includes reconstruction of the Indian Wharf – Reconstruction of the Indian Wharf along the section of up to 550 m from the Norwegian Wharf with a maximum exit to water up to 7.5 m and up to technical depth of -15.5 m to adapt the wharf for handling vessels with larger parameters.

Stage III will refer to reconstruction of the Hel Wharf – Reconstruction of the Hel Wharf along the section of 965 RM aimed at achieving technical depth at the wharf up to -15.5 m and at retrofitting the wharf with a crane track with span of 30 m.

Task 2, implemented in the years 2014-2020 within stages II and III, will be a continuation of Stage I of this investment, which includes reconstruction of the Romanian Wharf and is implemented from the financial perspective 2007-2013.

The basic objective of deepening of the approach track and internal water areas of the Port of Gdynia as well as of reconstruction of the wharves is to enable much bigger ships to call at the port, with maximum length of up to 400 m, width of up to 58 m and maximum draught of up to 15 m (current maximum draught is 13 m) and to improve navigation conditions and safety of the building. At present, such big vessels may call only at the external part of the Port of Gdynia and short-shipped only, which has an influence on a decline in attractiveness of the offer and effectiveness of sea transport. The planned deepening also involves reconstruction of hydrotechnical structures of particular wharves in order to ensure proper parameters for mooring and handling big vessels.

The project will contribute to an increased level of reloading operations in terminals of the Port of Gdynia and, thereby, to increased competitiveness of the Port of Gdynia in the region of the Baltic Sea and in the Transport Corridor Baltic – Adriatic of Trans-European Transport Networks TEN-T1. The Port of Gdynia has maritime container, ro-ro and ferry connections to the European network of motorways, express roads and railway routes. The project will contribute to the achievement of presumed detailed objectives of the aforementioned Measure in the Operational Programme Infrastructure and the Environment 2014-2020 by improving navigation parameters of the port. This will enable container and bulk vessels bigger than so far to call at the port, to moor at the wharves and to handle them. In consequence of using larger ships there will be a decline in unit costs of transporting one container and one ton of bulk cargo. This refers to both the economic cost, which will increase the competitiveness of sea transport as the most environmentally-friendly form of transport, and environmental costs, by reducing emissions which contaminate the environment and noise level per unit of cargo. Implementation of the Investment is an action which contributes to the improvement of competitiveness of sea ports, improvement of maritime safety, reduction of environmental pollution.
