"Virtual Patient" - An intelligent assistant for medical students and young doctors that helps with the process of education and improving skills in diagnosing and treating diseases.
The aim of the project is to conduct research, development, and pre-implementation work that results in the introduction of a virtual education assistant supporting the educational process of diagnosing and treating diseases. The solution is meant to support medical students and young doctors. It is designed to enhance the quality, attractiveness, and cost-effectiveness of the teaching process according to OSCE standards. Based on a knowledge base prepared by experts describing selected medical cases and the interactive communication functionality, the assistant facilitates learning medical interview and treatment planning using diagnostic tests: laboratory, imaging, physical examinations, and specialist consultations. The medical interview resembles a natural conversation as much as possible. The student engages in unconstrained conversation, ask the patient questions, and orders necessary tests to make a diagnosis. Features and functionalities of the solution include:
- Interactive communication using natural language (Polish, English).
- Interactive creation of “patients” based on rules stored in the knowledge base and models generating diagnostic test results.
- Creator Wizzard which is used by lectures to create or modify clinical cases.
- Monitoring the student’s progress and interaction history with the program, including verifying whether the student asked required questions and ordered necessary tests, and assessing time spent on each stage of the examination.
- Evaluating student’s soft skills based on questions asked.
- Assessing the fit of diagnostic path chosen by students based on the analysis of the student’s interaction with the simulated patient.
