Rozwój biogazowni rolniczych jest istotny w kontekście realizacji postanowień Pakietu Klimatyczno-Energetycznego. Niepodważalną korzyścią stosowania biomasy roślinnej jest stabilność generowania energii elektrycznej oraz jej produkcja. Obecnie większość powstających biogazowni wykorzystuje jako substrat kiszonkę z kukurydzy, co jest związane z obowiązującym od kilku lat systemem wsparcia, preferującym kukurydzę, np. w Niemczech – jej dobrą wydajność, wielkość plonów oraz efektywność biogazownia. Należy zauważyć, iż powszechne wykorzystanie kukurydzy wpływa negatywnie na tworzenie się monokultury upraw. Dlatego istnieje wysoka potrzeba wprowadzenia do ogólnego wykorzystania substratów, które efektywnie zastąpią powszechnie używaną kukurydzę, będącą również substratem bardzo drogim. Przedmiotowy projekt ma na celu rozwiązanie tego problemu poprzez dokonanie badań nad wykorzystaniem rożnika przerośniętego. Ze wstępnych badań wynika, że wskazana roślina posiada istotne cechy ze względu na możliwość zastosowania jako substrat w biogazowniach rolniczych.
