Zero energy building in modular construction
Unibep SA is a company from Bielsk Podlaski. Currently, it is one of the largest construction companies in Poland, operating on the market for 70 years.
One of the areas of activity of Unibep SA is the production of wooden multi-family houses, which are constructed from the so-called modules. Modules are ready-made parts of a building that can be joined together very quickly. Even multi-story buildings can be made of modules. Until recently, such structures were associated with temporary, cheap structures. Currently, thanks to the development of technology, the quality of modular houses does not differ from those built using traditional methods.
Knowledge is power
Unibep builds houses in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. The company is constantly striving for the technological development of the constructed buildings. Therefore, it took part in a call for funding a research project. The aim of the project was to develop a modular building structure that would not draw energy from the outside, in other words, it would be self-sufficient.
Thanks to solutions such as heat recovery from ventilation or perfect insulation, the demand for heating energy in this type of house is very low. Additionally, a zero-energy building does not emit carbon dioxide. So it is environmentally friendly.
The funding allowed to create a prototype of such a building. The assembly of the main structure of the prototype looked spectacular and attracted a large group of viewers. One by one, the modules were arranged in four storeys. The entire operation took several hours.
The building uses new technologies – three different types of external walls, three types of roof and three types of floors on the ground. There is also a heat pump and photovoltaic panels. As part of the research and development work, the building has been subjected to various tests. Acoustic, tightness, settlement and deformation tests were performed, and in addition, temperature and humidity sensors were placed in all external partitions to check the behavior of the walls in real conditions. This allowed for the verification of design solutions and their improvement. Thanks to EU funds, the company can start producing and selling such buildings.
