Protection of endangered species related to aquatic habitats in Warsaw
The project involves the implementation of comprehensive in situ measures to actively protect endangered species and habitats associated with aquatic ecosystems in Warsaw. The planned actions are aimed at improving the living conditions of the population of rare and endangered animal species in Poland, whose refuges are located within the borders of Warsaw, and contribute to stopping the degradation and disappearance of wetlands as well as maintaining their natural character and function. Activities will be implemented, among others in the Natura 2000 area of the Central Vistula Valley and in three nature reserves: Morysin, Jeziorka Czerniakowskie, and Kabacki Forest. Some of the activities will be carried out within the water reservoirs in the districts of Żoliborz, Bielany, Mokotów and Śródmieście.
The main goal of the project is to improve the state of conservation and protection of endangered animal species and habitats associated with reservoirs and watercourses in Warsaw Warsaw. The main tasks carried out under the project will concern the partial renaturization of the coastal zone around selected water reservoirs and planting native coastal vegetation. Alien invasive species will be eliminated in selected locations, primarily ash-leaved maple and knotweed. In the Nature 2000 area in the Wilanów district, activities will be carried out on clearing grasslands and sandy shores. In addition, the project assumptions provide for the construction of infrastructure necessary to improve the conservation status of endangered animal species and habitats. Parallel to the natural and infrastructural tasks, information and promotion activities will be carried out, aimed at strengthening the ecological awareness of the inhabitants of Warsaw and learning good, pro-ecological habits. Through such activities, it is also planned to spread knowledge about the occurrence and ways of protecting wetlands in Warsaw.
Activities planned as part of the project will help to stop the degradation process and disappearance of wetlands caused by progressive urbanization, development of urban infrastructure and the emergence of so-called ecological barriers, as well as preservation of the natural character and function of these areas. The improvement of the conservation status of habitats planned as a result of the project implementation measured by the area of habitats supported in order to obtain better protection status concerns 290 ha. The implementation of this project will improve the conservation status of 5 habitats and 13 species occurring in Warsaw.
