perspective
2014 - 2020

The challenge: to reduce the process of soil and surface water pollution in Ostaszewo and Chernyakhovsk, and indirectly also the basins of the Vistula, the Vistula Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Problems: • low efficiency of removing pollution from sewage (effect of outdated technology) • insufficient capacity of the treatment plant for the forecasted larger amount of sewage • unstable and unreliable operation of sewage treatment plants The main objective: to reduce the negative impact of sewage treatment plants in Chernyakhovsk and Ostaszewo on the natural environment. Specific objectives: • increasing the efficiency of wastewater treatment • fulfillment of legal requirements (pollution indicators in treated wastewater) • increasing the capacity of the treatment plant in Ostaszewo so as to adapt it to the future increased demand The main outputs: • new treatment plant in Ostaszewo • three compact new treatment plants in Mezhdurechie, Kamenskoye, Privolnoye Beneficiaries: • residents of the Ostaszewo and residents of adjacent villages – 1000 people • inhabitants of Mezhdurechie, Privolnoye, Kamenskoye villages – 1600 people An indirect group of recipients will be tourists and residents of areas located in northern Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast. The cross-border approach undertaken in project is significant as the nature of wastewater treatment in Ostaszewo, Mezhdurechie, Privolnoye, Kamenskoye is cross-border. The western border of the Ostaszewo runs on the Vistula River, and the Russian towns covered by the project are located on rivers that are a tributary of the Pregoła River, which has an outlet in the Vistula Lagoon. This means that untreated sewage eventually reaches the Baltic Sea. The effect associated with reducing the problem of groundwater pollution is of cross-border nature – benefits will be felt both in Poland and Russia. Additionaly, the project will become a platform for exchange of organizational and technological know-how.
