Hereditas. Digitization and sharing of the NMW collections
In August 2020, the Director of the National Museum in Warsaw signed an agreement to co-finance further digitization works as part of the Hereditas project. Digitization and access to the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw. Co-financing in the amount of PLN 14,383,414.96 was granted from the European Regional Development Fund, Operational Program Digital Poland under Measure 2.3 Digital accessibility and usefulness of public sector information, sub-measure 2.3.2 Digital access to cultural resources. The project is also co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in the amount of PLN 2,636,183.79. The total value of the investment is PLN 18,634,230.02 gross. The aim of the project is to digitize the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw and to increase the availability of digital resources through the freely available Digital platform of the National Museum in Warsaw. The project is a continuation and extension of the project Open National Digitization and access to the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw, currently implemented by the National Museum in Poland, financed by OPDP Sub-measure 2.3.2. Project implementation period: from 2020/08/01 to 2023/07/31 Immediate goals: Carrying out digitization of 40,000 inventoried valuable cultural objects – museum resources of the National Museum in Warsaw. Developing metadata descriptions for digitized museum resources and ensuring their high scientific level and usefulness. Strengthening the technical and digitization potential of the National Museum in Warsaw through necessary infrastructure purchases and room adaptation works. Further increase in the quality, effectiveness and content value of the resources of the National Museum made available through the website supplied with new museum objects in a digital form. Completion of the electronic record of the National Museum in Warsaw. An extensive set of 40,000 relics and works of art from 51 thematic collections was selected for the project, including a unique set of equipment for the Museum in Nieborów and Arkadia (Department of the National Museum in Warsaw). All digitized objects will be made available free of charge on the MNW Digital website – which will be the result of the Open National project implemented until December 2020, in accordance with the requirements of WCAG 2.1, level AA. The project will enable effective access to priceless museum resources, essential for the entire Polish and European culture. The main project tasks focus on two key topics for digital sharing, i.e. descriptive metadata and digitization: creating a professional description of a work of art in a record system based on the international standard – recommended Categories for the Description of Works of Art, which will be made available to other museums. organizing metadata with dictionaries and completing the electronic record of files in accordance with the new instruction guaranteeing effective queries on our files, regardless of the repository. purchase of a new system for recording and managing monuments – an elementary project task. necessary adaptation works of two rooms for renovation studios (MNW Building) and digitization of monuments (Poster Museum). purchase of photographic equipment for digitization as well as IT hardware and software. hiring a digitization team.
