Innovative Approach to Historical Heritage: Scientific Heritage of Veterinary Medicine of the Ukrainian-Polish Borderlands
The biggest challenge and the main idea of establishing cross-border cooperation between the Stepan Gzhytskyi National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnologies Lviv and the Regional Podkarpacka Veterinary Chamber in Przemysl and Regional Lubelska Veterinary Chamber in Lublin is to save from oblivion the rich Polish-Ukrainian historical heritage in the veterinary field. For example, one of the first horse-riding school in the region was founded in Lviv in 1457. The school specialized in training experienced staff on treatment and care of horses and pets. Subsequently, the horse-riding school expanded and opened new departments. Later, veterinary medicine was taught in the newly established Lviv Academy (1661), but it became a classical university department of veterinary medicine only in 1784. The Veterinary School was opened in 1881 and received the status of a higher school (academy) with a corresponding increase in staff and funding in 1896. The University was very popular as for Ukrainians as for polish professionals, for example, in Poland 1,200 veterinarians who survived the war (registration since 1939), most of them were graduates of the Academy of Veterinary Medicine in Lviv. Several unique methods of surgical treatments many of which have now been forgotten, were conducted for the first time here, in Lviv. A lot of veterinary medicine books published from the 18th century the 20th century are preserved in the library of the University and should be digitized to open one of the most beautiful and unknown pages in the vet history of Poland and Ukraine. Main objective of the PL-UA partnership will be the protection and promotion of cultural and historical heritage of veterinary medicine, strengthening cultural links of cooperation in this sphere, increasing the potential of local communities and improving the image and attractiveness of the region.
