Modernization of water management in Gurievsk and Młynary
The common challenge for beneficiaries is inefficient and unstable water supply and sewage system in Młynary and Gurievsk leading to threat to groundwater resources in cross-border area. Problems: • low efficiency of removing pollution from sewage (effect of outdated technology) in Młynary; • unstable and unreliable operation of water supply system in Gurievsk; • low quality of water delivered in Gurievsk; • high operating costs of water supply system in Gurievsk as a result of high water losses. The objective: to reduce the negative impact of water and sewage management in Gurievsk and Młynary on the natural environment. Specific objectives: • meeting the legal requirements regarding the quality of water supplied and pollution indicators in treated wastewater; • increasing the efficiency of wastewater treatment in Młynary; • ensuring stable water supply for the inhabitants of Gurievsk. The main outputs of the project: • new treatment plant in Młynary; • rebuilt water supply system in Gurievsk. Beneficiaries of the project will be residents of: • Młynary Commune – 2 000 people; • Bolshoe Isakovo, Vasilkovo, Maloe Isakovo, Maloe Vasilkovo – 12 402 people. An indirect group of recipients will be tourists and residents of areas located in the Pomeranian, Warmian-Masurian Voivodships and Kaliningrad Oblast. The nature of water and sewage management problem in Młynary and Gurievsk is cross-border. The construction of new wastewater treatment plant in Młynary will reduce the problem of groundwater pollution in the Vistula basin, the Vistula Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The benefits will be felt both in Poland and in Russia. Reconstruction of water supply network in Gurievsk thanks to reduction in excessive use of water will lead to preservation of groundwater resources. It will have a direct impact on groundwater resources condition in Kaliningrad oblast and northern Poland. Moreover, the project will become a platform for exchange of experience.
