perspective
2014 - 2020

“Digitalisation did not really arrive to the leisure boating industry of the South Baltic area yet. Handwritten paper receipts are still the standard in many small harbours. Wide parts of the region are a “blank spot” regarding use of IT solutions by leisure boat ports (see map https://harba.co/harba-app-reserve-pay-berth-mooring/), and the harbour clearly lag behind e.g. DK, NL or the Med. Only recently, simple digital tools started to spread (e.g. marina management software). But even the large marinas do not apply more comprehensive & integrated digital communication with external suppliers and vis-à-vis customers yet (e.g. shared remote boat monitoring of vessel owners & harbour masters, digitised communication between harbour & boaters, incl. easy “check-in / check-out” routines or booking options for external services e.g. food delivery). A wider digitalisation of the supply chains around harbours in the SBA is, therefore, still pending. The reasons for the low degree of digitalisation are twofold: (1) Many harbours feel no pressure to optimize processes & costs as they are run by clubs or municipalities. And the staff has often only little knowledge of opportunities of digitalization. (2) With a few exceptions (e.g. Harba), available commercial IT solutions are too complex & expensive for the often small SBA harbours, which have little incomes as prices for berths & services are low compared to Med or NL. The main project “DigiMar” seeks to overcome these barriers that hamper a more comprehensive digitalisation of leisure boating supply chains in the SBA. This shall be achieved – in partnership with SMEs – by developing & deploying adapted commercial solutions that comply with the specific profile of SBA harbours. The Seed Money project creates two prerequisites for this ambitious approach: (a) A consortium that effectively reaches out to SBA harbour operators; (b) The identification of SMEs that could deliver the required, adapted IT solutions for the SBA
