perspective
2014 - 2020

The assessment of the state of intermodal transport in the SBR indicates the need for greater business activation, cross-border cooperation of the logistics and transport industries and faster development of intermodal solutions. The number of freight units in the region is constantly increasing but the share of intermodal transport has not improved in recent years, despite the fact that new infrastructure is being built on Baltic-Adriatic Corridor(BAC) and it’s extension to Scandinavia (Baltic Link). On top they are losing cargo volumes despite being the optimal and eco-friendly south–north maritime connection. The main reason for that is deficiency of strong business and social ties between the market participants of the supply chains. The challenge is also the lack of sufficient economic activity generated by logistic and intermodal operators. The project focus will therefore be the build-up of SME-networks focusing on promoting and supporting cross-border cooperation. Project partners will act as a catalyst and inform about available intermodal solutions. As the majority of the transhipment in the region is still road-based there is a strong need to shift transport habits, digitise transport and develop intelligent supply chain management tools. Finally, attention should also be paid to the underdeveloped infrastructure, including accessibility to seaports and compliance with ‘last mile’ connection requirements. Other obstacles are: uneven distribution and an insufficient number of intermodal terminals. Seed money funding will contribute to the launch of the process of developing business activation and cross-border cooperation between the enterprises. The regular project will lead to the preparation of cooperation strategy between the companies in the logistics and transport industry, which will ensure the implementation of business, marketing, legislative and technological solutions aimed at increasing zero or low-emission transport in the region.
