perspective
2014 - 2020

Until the Covid-19 pandemic the tourism was one of leading sectors in the world contributing to global GDP by 10,4 % and creating 1 out of 10 jobs. However, due to travel restrictions and safety issues tourism industry became among the most affected sectors with a massive fall of demand. COVID-19 has also impacted human society with life-threatening and unprecedented health issues: the pandemic and the related containment measures (quarantine, social distancing, self-isolation) have had a detrimental impact on mental health. Almost 25% of COVID-19 patients suffer from fatigue, sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression. The mapping and promotion of nature-based wellness (NBW) tourism packages, integrating recreation in nature services and nature-based medical therapies, could act as an effective tool for the recovery of social life, cultural bonds, economic growth and health issues in SBA. The network of institutions, participating in tourism development (providers, DMOs, ITCs, associations, local and regional authorities) will enhance cooperation in promotion of jointly developed solutions (e-map) and exchange of know-how, essential for poor regions and newly occupied NBW service providers. NBW tourism could act as form for sustainable regional development since it uses nature-based resources for different individual activities (e.g. canoening, biking) and the therapists/nature guides required services (e.g. thermal waters, thalassotherapy, forest-therapy), and fosters cultural exchange through experiencing foreign wellness traditions and cultural heritage. On the personal level NBW activities enable rejuvenation of body, mind and spirit; on economic level – strengthens the resilience of destinations as it increases tourism expenditure, provides economic benefits for local business and residents, reduces tourism seasonality. The project will help SBA to recover in the post-Covid-19 era and become the area where nature, culture assets, and economy work in synergy.
