perspective
2014 - 2020

Due to the fact that we live longer, more and more people get cancer, and thanks to better treatments survival rates after cancer have significantly improved in recent years. Together with emigration of young people, low birth rates and for the German part of South Baltic region, the highest average age in the country, will lead to a dramatic increase of cancer patients in the future. In combination with long distances to medical centers and limited public transportation, there is a strong need to develop new ways of making cancer diagnostics and treatments available to patients in their own homes by the use of new technologies. This can save a large part of the transportation to the hospital for patients and their relatives, which is especially important in rural areas, and reduce the risk of infections for these vulnerable patients (a learning from the Covid19 pandemic), and contribute to a high quality and cost efficient cancer treatment to a growing number of patients in future health care. The aim of this project in line both with the Specific Objective 5.1 of improving cross-border cooperation capacity and with the future program measure of “Digitizing” the the program region in order to improve e-Health solutions for the benefit of the broad population in the area. A cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing on the use of new technologies in home diagnostics and treatment for cancer patients has a large potential for all countries within the South Baltic program region. A seed money project will jointly work out a concept paper serve to propose project ideas for the common challenges in cancer treatment and to build up a network, which a future collaboration could build on and benefit from. The partners need Seed Money to be able to share experiences from the Interreg Deutschland-Danmark project Changing Cancer Care and to adapt conceptions and processes to a broader South Baltic initiative.
