Stay Cyber Safe - Increase the competitiveness of SME’s from the South Baltic area by increasing the cyber security and trustiness competences.
„Raising need of digitalisation especially also in SME. Cyber security is not in focus of SME. Risk of attacks is rapidly rising. Unskilled staff and manager even not aware about the risk, while end-consumers are looking for trustworthy offers to store their sensitive data. While data is being secured in large companies and organisations, small and medium-sized enterprises, which are the most prevalent form of enterprises in the South Baltic area, are less secured, less prepared and state easy targets to cyber-attacks. Especially, the COVID19 crisis showed how important the Internet and computers are for SMEs to maintain their business. In order to survive the pandemic and to continue in business many SMEs had to take business to cloud services, upgrading their internet services, improving their websites, and enabling staff to work remotely. Criminals are targeting SMEs because many SMEs now have staff working remotely, have deployed systems quickly rather than securely, and many do not have adequate cybersecurity defences in place. Based on Cybersecurity Breaches Survey almost half of businesses report having cybersecurity breaches or attacks in 2020. Amount of attacks among small companies amounted to 62%, medium-sized companies 68%. Among the 46 per cent of businesses that identify breaches or attacks, one in five have experienced a material outcome, losing money or data. Two in five were negatively impacted, for example requiring new resources, having staff time diverted or causing wider business disruption. According to ENISA Report – Cybersecurity for SMES Challenges and Recommendations the greatest challenges for SMEs among others are low cybersecurity awareness of the personnel, inadequate protection of critical and sensitive information, lack of suitable cybersecurity guidelines specific to SMEs.
