HUB(-ing) more than Mobility- Increase awareness and competence in terms of mobility hubs towards to improve the quality and environmental sustainability of transport in SB area.
Mobility as a service – mobility hubs – circular and more resource efficient development In many regions of the South Baltic area the awareness of the decision makers and residents of the need to radically change the transport behaviour remains at a very low level. On the other hand, such challenges as the climate crisis, traffic congestion, carbon emissions from fossil resulting from the use of fossil fuels, disrupted supply chains resulting from the covid-19 pandemia, and, last but not least, energy crisis resulting from the military conflict burning in Ukraine force us to look for ways of alternative ways of meeting daily mobility needs. The future of mobility is based as well on the assumption, that we need to develop ways of meeting the demand for transport without resorting to the possession of transport means (in particular – private cars). Hence, in the process of development of sustainable mobility solutions, the concept of Mobility- as- a- Service (MaaS) has been developed, and- in connection with it – mobility hubs. Mobility hubs, i.e. physically designated points in the public space, where various types of mobility solutions and services are concentrated. In particular, the self-service and environment friendly shared mobility vehicles (bicycles, e-bikes, e-cargo bikes, e-scooters, e-mopeds, and e-cars) are offered and promoted there. Naturally, the concept of mobility hubs assumes their location at public transport modes (such as metro stations, railway stations, bus and tram loops, Park & Ride as well as Bike & Rail etc. Thus the two most efficient categories of urban mobility modes (public transport and shared mobility systems) have an opportunity to complement each other and create genuinely sustainable transport networks as a feasible, accessible alternative to traveling around the city in private cars.
