GreenerFlow- Towards greener traffic flow in the South Baltic Region: a data-driven approach to the congestion problem
Initial situation: Congestion is a significant source of emissions from road transport. TomTom (2022) estimates that 15% of CO2 emissions in London, 13% in Paris, and 10% in Berlin come from inefficient traffic and congestion. Stop-and-go traffic causes an increased number of acceleration and deceleration events, which cause an increase in CO2 emissions. Inefficient traffic flow also increases the number of road incidents and hinders road maintenance. The challenge is to manage traffic flow on existing road networks. In many metropolitan areas within the South Baltic Region (SBR), we observe a continuous increase in traffic volumes. Increasing severity and duration of congestion lead to air quality degradation, especially near major roads such as motorways. The opportunity: Increasing the traffic flow efficiency is the way to improve the quality and environmental sustainability of road transport in the SBR. This will impact the life quality of millions of residents in SBR metropolitan areas (for example, Tri-City). Improving traffic flow requires a) substantial amounts of data from diverse sets of locations at various times, b) incorporating multi-modal data, time series, and images c) understanding the seasonality such as holiday congestion, d) state-of-the-art data-driven approaches to do traffic predictions and factor analysis, get insight into the factors affecting traffic congestion, e) developing methods to detect congestion, analyze its cause and effects. Undertaking such a difficult research task requires the involvement of project partners in the preparation of the project proposal. The seed funding will allow to: Systematically review literature. Review and validate (quality, complementarity, usability) available data sets and collection methods. Communicate and meet with potential partners. Select project partners by research & road management units. Organize workshops to work on the regular project application.
