FLSSB- Local Food Supply in the South Baltic Region
After the Covid -19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, countries are focusing on improving the self-sufficiency of the food supply in countries and in particular regions. In Sweden, less than 1% of food bought is locally produced and distributed. To increase the share, new systems need to be built with complete supply chains from the production of vegetables and meat and other raw materials, through food production and to retailers, restaurants, or large kitchens of the public sector. In many countries the development toward large-scale national food production and distribution has led to the dismantling of local and regional supply chains and there are not many producers, wholesalers, and retailers of any size left. To build local supply chains collaboration between local partners will be needed, many of them SMEs in agriculture and food production. There is also a need to learn from experiences in other countries and there are opportunities to export successful solutions and business models between countries. The SME En God Granne has worked for 15 years to try to increase the supply of locally produced food through supermarkets, but found that it is very difficult, due to the focus of the large food chains on large suppliers to reduce cost, they do not want to buy from small suppliers. Now, Sustainable Development Skåne and En God Granne collaborate in the project Good Local Food Collaborations to build supply chains of locally produced food to municipal kitchens in Sweden. Local and regional authorities are large buyers of food for kitchens at hospitals, schools, and elderly care homes. They can use their procurements to help form local SME supply chains or take the initiative to build supply chains that also can deliver to local supermarkets, shops or markets. To start this process, seed funding and regular projects will be needed. Actors in different countries can learn from each other and start the process to build local supply chains.
