perspective
2014 - 2020

Transport, including waterborne transport, is responsible for a substantial part of the South Baltic’s greenhouse gas emissions, causing global temperatures to rise due to the greenhouse effect. Significant reductions in the emissions from the waterborne transport are needed in order to meet the 2030 and 2050 climate targets in line with the European Green Deal. Focus should be put on decarbonisation of the transport waterborne. In this regard, the South Baltic area can be a pilot place for implementing actions for the greening of the waterborne transport sector in Europe, both maritime and inland waterways transport. Currently the vast majority of ships in the South Baltic area are being powered by diesel engines highly affecting air quality. Considering its importance to the EU climate goals, efforts are needed to increase the uptake of waterborne e-transport solutions. The “Baltic E-ferry” project is related to SO 3.1 (2014-2020 EU perspective), since it will improve the quality and environmental sustainability of transport services in the South Baltic area. Indeed, this is an objective pursued by all partners of the seed money project. Three participating cities (Gdansk, Barth and Silute) are seeking a green solution for water transport in their areas. • Silute in Lithuania is seeking a green solution for water transport for the Curonian Lagoon, which is included in the UNESCO heritage and Natura 2000. • Gdańsk in Poland is looking for best waterborne e-transport solutions in order to provide a permanent connection by water between different city parts. • Barth in Germany, is interested in offering a green waterborne transport service to the their main tourist attractions, such as the Water Castle. The partnership is complemented by 2 additional institutions representing the research and non-governmental sector. Without the seed money funding, project partners involved would not have the capacity to develop the project idea into a regular project appli
