STRAPP- Stroke app in ambulances - improve recognition of stroke
Stroke is the second-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of death and disability combined worldwide, and it is estimated to increase by 27 per cent by 2047. Stroke is a medical emergency where early assessment and recognition of symptoms are essential for correct acute response and optimal treatment to reduce risk of permanent neurological deficit. Recent estimates of the pace of neural circuitry loss in human ischemic stroke emphasize the time urgency of stroke care. Each hour in which treatment fails to occur, the brain loses as many neuron as it does in almost 3.6 years of normal aging. All of the countries in the South Baltic Region struggles to reduce time from a stroke occurs to the beginning of treatment. Identification of stroke symptoms, especially atypical symptoms, is challenging for the patients, bystanders, and first line healthcare professionals/ambulance personnel. Previous research indicate the need for increased precision, which will help patients and provide a better use of the resources in the stroke unit, if the number of non-stroke patients brought to stroke-units could be reduced. This would also reduce the risk of adverse events for the patient. In this project, the aim to develop a suite of integrated decision support tools, which can help ambulance personnel, improve the identification of suspected stroke patients and thus increase the likelihood of referring those patients who actually have a stroke to the stroke-units. The idea is to look into advanced methods of new technology to create a joint decision support system that will be imbedded in an app for mobile phones. We expect to investigate at least three parts
