Monitoring the quality of raw water used in the production of drinking and recreational water, for chemical and microbiological hazards, including agents causing infectious diseases that result from human activity
The idea of the project is to monitor pollution resulting from human activity in raw water used to produce drinking water and monitoring surface waters used for recreation. Monitoring will be carried out basing on the strategy of expanding the current range of water testing parameters by the scope of microbiological and chemical threats that are determinants of health problems occurring in connection with the use of water in the indicated rivers on both sides of the borders. Monitoring will concern microbiological and chemical threats. Microbiological monitoring will include the determination of coliform bacteria, including Escherichia and Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholerae bacteria, which enter the water together with domestic sewage, mainly from unsewered areas. Additionally, pathogenic viruses that are capable of causing a rapidly spreading epidemic among people will be determined. The monitoring will also concern the analysis of environmental conditions that favor the development of toxic strains of cyanobacteria and their determination. Cyanobacterial microcystin toxins negatively affect the health quality of recreational and drinking water. Chemical monitoring will include the indication bisphenol A. It is a chemical compound used in the production of plastics. Bisphenol A belongs to a group of compounds that interfere with the action of human hormonal system (among others). As a result of the project, three new research methods will be created to determine water quality parameters. The implemented methods will allow for obtaining data on the condition and quality of water during monitoring (research). This data will be sent to local water and recreational water authorities. Additionally, residents covered by the project will be informed about the research results. The project will include cross-border activities, i.e. joint monitoring of the transfer of factors threatening human health through river waters, which will a
