perspective
2004 - 2006

No-one has done more for Polish mountain biking than Maja Włoszczowska, the Olympic vicechampion in Beijing and gold medal winner at the world championships in MTB marathon. Her Victorie did magic for promoting this sport. But mountain biking is also growing in popularity thanks to the efforts of many municipalities and communes. Głuszyca on the Bystrzyca River is just one of almost twenty places in Poland where local authorities hale created professional routes for mountain bikers.

The town is a good base for exploring six trails: green (Tour de Głuszyca), orange (Głuszyckie Ponds), yellow (Underground Trail), blue (Waligóra), red (Border Trail) and black (Rogowiec Castle). They are of varying difficulty and length (ranging from 11.2 to 53km) and each of them offers something special. For example, the yellow trail takes in the Pięć Stawów (Five Ponds), the underground complexes at Soboń and Osówka, and an old narrow-gauge railway line. The viewpoint of Cesarskie Skałki (Imperial Rocks) is the highlight of the orange trail. The longest Tour de Głuszyca trail, mapped out for expert mountain bikers, runs across the ranges of the Góry Sowie, Góry Suche and Rybnicki Grzbiet (2500 m of total altitude difference) and near the ruined Rogowiec Castle. Altogether, these trails constitute the MTB Zone, favoured by mountain bikers.

Every year it plays host to one of the most important MTB marathons and one of the MTB Challenge stages. In May, in cooperation with other local authorities from the Wałbrzych region, Głuszyca is organizing the “Górale, na start!” (Mountain bikers, get ready) competition. These events have been popularized by the project promoting the MTB Zone, both in Poland and abroad. Culminating in the Głuszyca Marathon, they attract a sizeable group of participants from award-winning Czech teams. Last year, the competitors had to negotiate 89km with a total altitude difference of more than 3100 metres.

The project “Creation and promotion of cross-border tourist product – MTB Zone” has contributed to the popularization of the region’s natural treasures while respecting the restrictions as to moving and staying in a protected area. The www.strefamtb.pl Website has also been promoted, featuring an extensive gallery with photos from the competitions plus regularly updated information on the trails and events that may be of interest to all mountain bikers.
