Modernisation of passenger carriages with seats of UIC-Y type 111A, 112A and YB
Given the long period of passenger carriages operational life it is a common practice of the railway authorities to modernise them. PKP Przewozy Regionalne uses the compartment carriages with seats of the older UIC-Y type 75% of which is adjusted to the design speed of 160 km per h, which means that they can now and in the future fully use the technical possibilities of practically all railway lines in Poland.
The concept developed and implemented in 2003 concerning the renovation of the existing park with the use of European Union subsidies, makes an assumption that these carriages will be modernised by development of a completely new interior and standard repairs of the main running parts and the box construction.
Within the framework of the project 81 passenger carriages with seats of the UCI-Y type were modernised, these were of the following types: 111A, 112A and YB. The project resulted in the creation of carriages that fully correspond to the contemporary expectations within the scope of travelling comfort and, at the same time, the cost of their modernisation is not increased by modernising the chassis, e.g. new carts.
The introduction of carriages modernised in that manner met with a positive response of the travellers in the interregional trains (express trains). Unfortunately, the number of the performed modernisations does not correspond to the needs, which decreases the competitive position of the services of this company causing that daily commuting is tiresome and that in turn shifts the passengers interest to passenger cars and buses generating high external costs of transport that burden the whole society.
