Spa Park in Kudowa-Zdrój
Sitting between the ranges of the Table Mountains (Góry Stołowe) and the Pogórze Orlickie, Kudowa-Zdrój is mainly known for its natural therapeutic qualities and mellow climate. Visitors and patients come here all year round for the medical waters, sanatoriums, guest houses, abundance of tourist attractions in the area and the proximity of the Czech Republic.
Kudowa-Zdrój is one of the oldest spas in Europe. The first mention of its mineral springs is in 1580, and in the 1630s therapeutic bathing facilities started to rise on the site. In the interwar period, Kudowa-Zdrój enjoyed the reputation of a trendy and exclusive resort, attracting many distinguished guests.
The heart of the spa is the vast 14-hectare Park Zdrojowy (Spa Park) at the foot of Góra Parkowa. Almost all visitors begin their tour at the spacious Pump Room, one of the finest in Poland. Inspired by Baroque architecture, it was built in the early 20th century. The Pump Room connects with a large open Assembly Room called the Teatr pod Blachą (Tin Roof Theatre), where concerts are often held. Rising opposite, the so-called Zameczek (Small Castle) was built in 1772 as a guest house for patients and is now a sanatorium. Another sanatorium, the Polonia, is an eye-catching edifice housing the Stanisław Moniuszko Teatr Zdrojowy.
November 2011 saw the end of the restoration work that brought the park back to its 1920s appearance. The lanes regained their beauty, ramps were constructed for disabled visitors and the Pająk mineral spring was modernized. Greenery was revitalized with great care by pruning and tidying up the old trees, planting both new ones and shrubs, laying out large flower beds that form colourful live carpets from spring to autumn and installing an irrigation system.
With the new lighting and the illumination of the main square, concert bowl, strolling hall, the gates along the main alley, the fountain and the monumental copper beech, the park makes now an impressive sight in the evening. An illuminated children’s playground was also built.
Another new highlight in the park is the music garden where greenery and flowers wind around supports resembling musical instruments: the piano, harp, double bass and a conductor’s stand, all placed in the setting of a floral “concert hall” made up of stage-like flower beds.
Today the old Spa Park is the thriving town centre, providing a location for outdoor events and major festivals such as the International Moniuszko Festival. The restoration of the Spa Park won a special commendation in the contest Poland Even More Beautiful. Seven Miracles of EU Funds.
