The Lower Vistula Regional Exhibition Centre in Tczew
One of the oldest towns on the Polish coast, Tczew certainly deserves closer exploration. It has a colourful history, an interesting Old Town with quaint little streets pervaded with an atmosphere of centuries past, two famous bridges and other treasures of the past. While in Tczew, a visit to the Lower Vistula Regional Exhibition Centre is a must. This tourist attraction is a real treat for enthusiasts of post-industrial architecture and an important centre of cultural animation.
Because Tczew’s development has always been based on the River Vistula, it is no accident that the local authorities have been engaged in a project to truly restore the river to the town. The works included the development of the embankment, construction of a harbour and revitalization of the Old Town. One of the most spectacular successes of the project is the Arts Factory – Lower Vistula Regional Exhibition Centre which is housed a post-industrial factory complex from the latter part of the 19th century.
The factory manufactured metal pro-ducts, and also military equipment during the Second World War, followed by gas meters and household appliances after the war. It was also used as a displaced persons camp during the German occupation.
The former industrial complex has served cultural purposes for over three decades. The year 1984 marked the opening of the Vistula Museum here – Poland’s first and the world’s fourth museum devoted to a river.
In 2006–2007 the historic buildings were restored. The modern design didn’t spoil the historic character of the complex. On the contrary – it emphasized the beauty of the 19th century industrial architecture which provides an original background to activities aimed at the popularization of the region of Kociewie with Tczew in its heart.
The new Centre is exceptionally dynamic. Apart from permanent exhibitions it offers amazing temporary exhibitions devoted to the history and culture of the region. One part of the complex still houses the Vistula Museum.
The Factory’s educational activities are also worth a mention. Lessons on history and regionalism, lectures and guided walking tours round Tczew are but a few of the offerings. The numerous workshops on offer enjoy huge popularity among visitors of all ages. These include amber craft, pottery, handmade paper, glass painting, weaving and even quill writing!
The Arts Factory is also a venue for conferences, training events, and meetings with artists and travellers.
The Lower Vistula Regional Exhibition Centre in Tczew received the main award in the 1st contest Poland Even More Beautiful. Seven Miracles of EU Funds in the Revitalization category.
