perspective
2004 - 2006

The institution that has been continuing the tradition of the oldest theatrical stage in Łódź (active since 1888), named after one of the greatest Polish actors in 1949, has become the largest dramatic theatre in Poland. The project consisted in establishing stages in several neighbouring towns, which joined the Large, Small and Studio stages of the theatre in Łódź. The idea had been born even before Poland joined the EU, which means that the project was fresh and original in every respect. The final decision to establish satellite theatres in four towns of the province was taken in 2006, with the first such theatre opening in 2008.

On the tangible level, the project required major upgrading works as regards the infrastructure and theatrical technology of five facilities in the Łódź Province: Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Łódź and the Municipal Cultural Centres in Piotrków Trybunalski, Skierniewice, Sieradz and Radomsko. The four satellite theatres were furnished with professional theatrical stages on the European level; in the main theatre in Łódź, maintenance works were conducted on the Large Stage, backstage, upper and lower lobbies, as well as in technical rooms and buildings.

The joint use of the upgraded facilities is planned for 10 years. It will include presenting the Stefan Jaracz Theatre productions on the regional stages (once every week in one of the towns), as well as organizing joint cultural and artistic events, also national and international in character. In this way, the main goals of the project will be realized: levelling the disparities in access to culture in the region of Łódź; consolidating the shared cultural identity of the region and creating a major theatrical centre. It must be remembered that the Łódź Province was created from local communities formerly belonging to several other provinces, and that is why in many places people still fail to relate to the capital of the province. The Stefan Jaracz Theatre – an insitution with a glorious past and a very intense artistic present – has decided to unite the inhabitants of the region by means of culture on the highest level.

Since the creation of the satellite stages, the whole repertoire has been prepared in a way that will allow its presentation both in the main theatre and in the regional theatres. In the future, as detailed in the project, the number of performances in each city will be growing. The directors of the cultural centres in which the stages were established have asserted that there is a huge interest. Another idea very likely to become fact soon is an international theatre festival.

The project of Creating the European Stages of the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in the Łódź Province received a special commendation in the 3rd contest Poland Even More Beautiful. Seven Miracles of EU Funds.
