Development of the shores of lake Drwęckie in Ostróda - stage I: construction of a sports and recreational complex (canoeing course, cable ski course for waterskiers, town beach)
Lake Drwęckie in Ostróda saw the official opening of Poland’s longest cable ski course for waterskiers. The 800-metre-long course has become one of the greatest tourist attractions in the region. The system of engines driving the cable is controlled electronically from the shore, which makes it safe and convenient to operate. The mechanism can be used by 7-9 waterskiers at the same time. Experts from Slovenia helped in constructing the facility, which also includes on-shore lockers, showers and a water sports rental. The ski course is certainly the most impressive but by no means the only result of developing the shores of Lake Drwęckie, a project supported by EU Funds under the Integrated Operational Programme of Regional Development.
The project also included the construction of a professional canoeing course where 200, 500 and 1000 metre competitions can be held in all categories. The course has a judges’ platform, stands for the viewers and auxiliary infrastructure. The town beach regained its former beauty, recreational and technical buildings were erected and a water sports rental was opened. Now, there are also new piers with a total area of 3,600 square metres, which is as much as the main section of the famous Sopot pier. In the first season after opening the ski course and the beach, they attracted some 15,000 people.
Soon the new facilities made Ostróda a renowned centre of water sports. In 2008 the town hosted the Polish Wakeboard Championships while in 2009 the European Canoe Association chose Ostróda as the venue for the European Canoe Marathon Championships. The same year the Polish Dragon Boat Championships will be held here.
The project significantly contributed to the town’s economic revival, particularly in tourism. Near the ski course, private investors are building now a hotel with more than 300 beds and a stylish tavern. Also, a five-star hotel with 400 beds is to be erected on a site adjacent to the new bathing place.
In the nearest future, Ostróda is planning to continue its investment in tourist facilities. They will include a waterside hostel with piers and other developments along Lake Drwęckie such as building new car parks, reinforcing the shores and promenade, marking out bike trails and walks and creating a monitoring system. The plans for the years 2010-2013 also include further restoration work at the Teutonic castle, the town’s major tourist attraction.
