Developing and promoting regional products
The project run by the Wielkopolska Tourist Organization in 2005-2008 is one of very few such initiatives in Poland targeted at the comprehensive promotion of cultural tourism. ‘What motivated us to embark on this initiative was an opportunity to gain subsidies. Thanks to EU Funds we were able to deliver a very ambitious and complex project which couldn’t have been financed with the regional budget,’ says Ewa Przydrożny, head of the Tourist Organization.
This comprehensive enterprise covers a number of complementary activities including the launch and regular updates of the web site www.turystyka-kulturowa-wlkp.pl, the production of promotional gadgets and bilingual information boards placed outside 25 historic buildings in the region and, most interestingly, the publication of leaflets describing 10 regional products of cultural tourism in Wielkopolska. These are: The Piast Wielkopolska – Trail of the Piast Royal House, Castles, Palaces and Manor Houses, Timber Churches and Common Buildings, Historic Poznań, Entertainment in Poznań, The History of Technology Trail, Historic Buildings in Wielkopolska’s Cities and Towns, Wielkopolska of Famous Poles, Pilgrimage Sites in Wielkopolska, Museums in Historic Buildings.
The leaflets are in four language versions: Polish, English, German and French. The availability of different language versions facilitates popularization of the region’s cultural treasures. Last year Wielkopolska region used a large-scale promotional campaign at a number of tourist fairs in Poland and abroad (including Germany and the Netherlands). It is estimated that the leaflets reached over 200,000 people, and the www.turystyka-kulturowa-wlkp.pl site has already gained popularity among web users.
The success of this initiative inspired the Tourist Organization to further development of the project. The information boards will soon be equipped with state-of-the-art QR (quick response) codes which will enable users of mobile phones and other mobile devices with the appropriate software to download the information from the boards and store it on their devices. Other plans include printing complementary publications, a website update, as well as the signposting of 100 additional cultural tourism sites in Wielkopolska. This initiative will be partly funded within the Wielkopolska Regional Operational Programme.
