Gniezno District
Apart from abounding in treasures of historic architecture and ancient technology, the region of Gniezno attracts visitors by its natural beauty, excellent opportunities for pursuing active recreation, and superb conditions for quiet relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The project “Good place, royal tradition” involved defining the top six tourist offerings of the region. These are: The Piast Route, active tourism, pilgrimages, agri-tourism, the Gniezno Narrow Gauge Railway and the Lednica Landscape Park.
The region of Gniezno is the cradle of Polish nationhood. Gniezno was the first capital of Poland. It was also in Gniezno that Poland’s first ruler adopted Christianity. Another momentous event was the Congress of Gniezno in AD 1000, at which Emperor Otto III outlined a vision of a united Europe, thus giving birth to medieval universalism. All of the places that played an important part in the early history of the Polish state are linked by one of Poland’s most interesting tourist trails – the Piast Route which wends its way through three capitals of the early Piast period – Poznań, Gniezno and Kruszwica.
Another unique place in the region is the Lednica Landscape Park protecting the natural and architectural treasures of the early Polish state. One part of the Park is an archaeological reserve run by the Museum of Early Piasts in Lednica.
The wealth of lakes and forests, beautiful landscapes and quiet corners are all conducive to the development of agri-culture – one of the region’s leading forms of tourism. For enthusiasts of active recreation, such as hiking, cycling, horse riding and kayaking, there are miles and miles of trails. Sailing, diving and other water sports complement the offer.
Established more than a hundred years ago, one of the landmarks of the region is the Gniezno Narrow Gauge Railway which runs between Gniezno and Anastazewo within the area of the enchanting Powidz Lanscape Park. Passengers can choose to travel in a 1950s carriage or a roofless car. Summertime marks a series of events which are collectively called “Summer with a Choo-Choo Train.”
The region also has a number of pilgrimage sites. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Licheń is among the most frequently visited sites, and the Third Millennium Gate draws young people from all over Europe.
