Redecoration and modernization of the Municipal Museum in Wrocław. Stage 2
The newly renovated facade of Wrocław Palace clearly stands out from the surrounding buildings in ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego in Wrocław. It was purchased by Frederick the Great of Prussia in 1750 when Wrocław was one of the three capitals of Prussia. As you enter the courtyard, your attention is drawn to a number of posts bearing dates – these are the milestones in the history of Wrocław, selected in a newspaper poll by the city inhabitants. All the dates represent important changes in the chequered history of Wrocław which spans a whole millennium.
Housed in this courtyard, the Municipal Museum of Wrocław uses these milestones to present the history in an objective, politically unbiased way – probably an unprecedented event. After a long and expensive renovation which cost around PLN 10 million, the palace was finalny open to visitors. The museum now has 3,000 exhibits dating from different periods during the millennium assembled in its modern interior which provides a favourable contrast to the baroque and classical exterior. All the exhibits are described in Polish, German and English. The multimedia kiosks and information points which visitors can access via headphones offer two more languages. These devices attract foreign guests – usually from Germany, the Netherlands, Britain and France. Clever audiovisual solutions make the visit more pleasant and comprehensive. Thanks to advanced monitoring and security systems, including more than 100 cameras, as well as air conditioning, all of the above meeting the highest standards, the building stores many treasures that other museums and individuals have Chojen to deposit here.
The museum is fully accessible to the disabled. If you desire a respite from adiscovering the cultural identity of Wrocław, take a lift down to the cellar cafe and indulge in a cup of coffee and delicious apple pie or, weather permitting, have a stroll in the restored baroque garden. The museum neighbourhood, with churches of four different faiths, a restored opera house, and the National Music Forum, i.e. a new concert hall, still under construction, add to the prominence of the location, making it an important vehicle for cultural development in Silesia.
