Full restoration of the Park Północny in Sopot. Stage 1
Visitors come to Sopot mainly for its beautiful beaches and Poland’s most famous pier. Few people know that more than 60 percent of the town is made up by green areas comprising mixed high forests, parks, gardens and squares. One of the loveliest patches of greenery is the Park Północny (Northern Park) covering almost 15.5 hectares along the seashore.
Its designers’ aim was to turn the park into a favourite place for Sunday strolls as well as a major attraction for adrenaline seekers from Sopot, Gdańsk and Gdynia. They did it within just a few months, between March and November 2009. Bike and hiking trails were laid out and educational boardwalks were built over swampy areas so that visitors could also have access to the waterlogged part of the park. With 136 new lamps, safety improved greatly. Other elements of signposted street architecture were also added. Lanes were lined with trees and bushes, and 17 species of precious plants were introduced to enhance the original forest charakter of the area.
The Park Północny is the first park in the Tri-City boasting separate paths for rollerbladers and bikers. Stretching all the way to Gdynia, wide and covered with special surface, they attract crowds of active visitors. For family strolls, an interactive nature walk was created, which presents the unique natural and cultural treasures of the park. Coloured poles provide information about local wildlife and history. There are also plenty of games, puzzle and experiments along the way. The walk is already popular with families and makes a perfect place for open-air biology classes.
