Extension and conversion of the railway station into the Centre of Education, Tourism and Culture in Stronie Śląskie on the plot No. 14/6
A cultural centre in the former railway station? Why not? Especially, if this new function can save a decaying monument. This was the solution adopted by the local government of Stronie Śląskie, which for a long time had been taking efforts to take over the 19th-century half-timbered railway station building. Ten years ago, this building stopped to be used, as the train service ceased at this station. However, today, it is teeming with life again.
Entering the Centre of Education, Tourism and Culture (CETC), you will get the impression that you have set your foot in a railway station waiting room. The squeaky swinging door, the original vestibule and imitations of travellers’ benches remind us of the former purpose of the building. The interiors, however, have been adapted to the needs of contemporary cultural centres. On the ground floor there are, among other things, rooms where fine arts, dance and theatrical classes or workshops are conducted, as well as office areas and tourist information points. In contrast, the cellar houses technical facilities. The building’s past is recalled by the railway loading platform that can be seen through the windows.
Connected with the historic railway station, the railway warehouse was converted into an auditorium, which can hold 200 people and is equipped with professional sound and lighting systems. Dance classes, film projections, concerts and theatrical performances are held here. Along the side walls, glazed galleries, which are perfect for the organisation of exhibitions, were added. The CETC has currently become the town’s cultural centre that has been yearned for before. The centre’s offer includes various classes for children and young people, which allow them to develop their artistic talents. Moreover, there is a ballet school for children, which represents a high standard. By contrast, the town’s older inhabitants can attend the meetings organised as part of the Senior Club, relaxation training classes and lectures as part of the University of the Third Age.
The spacious rooms are also the venue for larger events, e.g. the “Commune Easter Tables”, during which the prettiest Easter decorations and the tastiest Easter dishes are selected as the result of fierce competition among the participants. Moreover, the place’s tradition is referred to in the cyclical event entitled “Stronie Draisine Race” with draisine (i.e. a light auxiliary rail vehicle) rides and competition, being the event’s highlight. These events attract numerous guests from all over the Kłodzko Valley and the Czech Republic.
The conversion of a historic railway station into an institution that serves cultural purposes is a pioneering project in Poland. Thus, it can inspire other local governments to undertake similar actions. This applies especially to the Kłodzko Valley that, certainly, does not lack beautiful, yet decaying, railway buildings waiting for their new administrators.
