Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw
A visit to the Copernicus Science Centre begins with a discovery: never before has science been so exciting! Every visitor turns into a scientist, researcher and experimenter. There is no room for boredom! Movement, sound, light, music and visual effects – all exhibits are animated and interactive.
Opened in 2010, the Copernicus Scie-nce Centre is one of Europe’s most modern facilities of this kind, with six permanent galleries where visitors can carry out scientific experiments. One of the galleries is Re: Generation, designed by a think tank of sociologists, psychologists, artists and IT specialists. It offers visitors a chance to be exposed to experiments aimed at uncovering some secrets of human behaviour, to design a city of their dreams or to have a portrait painted by a robot artist. Those with a strong stomach can measure their resistance to stress in the “Hall of Fear,” others can try out their oratorical skills by delivering a speech from a parliamentary rostrum to a virtual audience. Depending on the temperament of the speaker, the “listeners” react with applause, whistles, yawns, or sometimes… they just fall asleep. For those eager to assume the role of a composer , there is a “reactable” – an electronic instrument that generates selected sounds and displays visual effects, allowing visitors to not only listen to, but also see the piece of music they have composed. The remaining galleries enjoy the same level of popularity. These are: Roots of Civilization, Lightzone, On the Move, Humans and the Environment, and, last but not least, Buzzz! – a gallery created especially for children.
The centre also houses the Heavens of Copernicus which opened in June 2011. This is an outstanding planetarium, which enables visitors to explore remote corners of the universe, look into a volcano crater or go back to the beginning of life on Earth.
One of the latest attractions is the Discovery Park – a green space around the Copernicus Centre and adjacent to the bank of the Vistula River, where visitors can find shelter from the hustle and bustle of city life and, at the same time, conduct experiments. Open to the general public, the park also has an audio exhibit called Whisperers, which you can use to compose a concerto for the natural sounds of thunder, water and volcano. Other similar attractions include a number of sound installations, such as Echo, Conference and Acoustic Mirrors which allow communication at a distance. The Discovery Park also comprises an outdoor gallery – a venue for artistic events, debates and meetings with writers.
The Copernicus Science Centre is a showcase institution. The project won the main award in the 4th contest Poland Even More Beautiful. Seven Miracles of EU Funds in the Venue category.
