perspective
2007 - 2013

Located in the region of the Upper Silesia, the town of Tarnowskie Góry prides itself on an age-old tradition of mining silver, zinc and lead. Adult tourists associate the town with interesting historic buildings. And what about children? No harm done either!

For the youngest Internet users there is KOTEK – a virtual guide to Tarnowskie Góry, partially financed with EU funds. This fascinating and adventurous tour is lead by a friendly character called Gwarek who shares many secrets with us, such as: Where does the name Tarnowskie Góry come from? Who were the gwareks? How was silver mined? What are adits and how were they cut in solid rock? Is it possible to row a boat underground?

Children might also see the most interesting sights in the town and around such as: the Historic Silver Mine, Black Trout Adit, Wrochem’s Castle, the Palace in Rybna, and many more. In all those places children are told fascinating legends and stories about the past. There are also other attractions – animations and games. Children can build a medieval castle, pretend to be a squire and assist a knight in putting on a heavy armour, mine for silver, compose their own melody, or make Silesian dumplings.

The website encourages kids to take part in an art adventure with the Tarnowskie Góry Community Centre where they can become dancers, musicians, actors or painters. Children, parents and teachers praise the Internet guide (www.kotek.tarnowskiegory.pl) for its attractive, fairy-tail design.

It has also been noticed by the jury of the 5th contest Poland Even More Beautiful. Seven Miracles of EU Funds. KOTEK was nominated for the main award in the Child-Friendly Place category.
