Katowice System of Integrated Transport Hubs – the „Sądowa” Hub
The project will be implemented in Katowice, the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship, precisely in Śródmieście District, in the area of Sądowa Street, Marii Goeppert-Mayer Street, Jana III Sobieskiego Street and Gliwicka Street.
The aim of the project is to build the “Sądowa” Hub as part of the Katowice System of Integrated Transport Hubs. It includes the construction of an adequate infrastructure in order to obtain interchange functions that allow passengers to change easily, in particular between buses (but also possibly between rail, tram, bike or individual transport) on local, regional, supra-regional, national and international routes.
Integration at the above mentioned levels involves concentrating in one place urban buses and long-distance buses: that is buses running within the Silesian Voivodeship as well as outside the Silesian Voivodeship to the neighbouring Voivodeships, buses running to major cities in the country, and buses running outside the country.
A properly organized interchange system which ensures a smooth and effective transition between different modes of transport (close proximity to the train station and tram stops at Plac Wolności Square) will increase the public transport usage.
The implementation of the project will help to achieve the set goals:
- integration of modes of transport- international, national, regional, urban and individual,
- multimodal transport- facilitating the change between modes of transport: bus-bus, bicycle-bus and tram-bus (a tram stop is located in close proximity) which will also increase the number of users,
- improvement of the quality and safety of public transport services in Katowice City,
- providing residents of the central subregion as well as other travellers with a facility that integrates urban transport with regional, national and international transport,
- improvement of the condition of natural environment by promoting collective transport and giving up individual transport as well as reducing air pollution generated by individual users,
- reducing traffic congestion,
- improvement of the functioning of public transport and promotion of collective transport in Katowice City
- improvement of the image of Katowice City and the public transport organizer,
The project includes:
- construction of a maintenance-free, single-level ground car park,
- construction of roofed multi-station platforms and bus stops to serve travellers using urban, local, regional, supra-regional, national and international transport,
- reconstruction of adjacent sections of Sądowa Street, Goeppert-Mayer Street and Jana III Sobieskiego Street in order to interconnect the hub with the transport network,
- construction of passengers and operators service area,
- construction of pedestrian and bicycle routes,
- construction and reconstruction of traffic lights at the intersections of Goeppert-Mayer Street with Sądowa Street and Sobieskiego Street,
- arrangement of greenery, street furniture as well as of decorative and informative elements.
