Restoration and modernization of historic buildings of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane for the preservation and presentation of the unique cultural heritage of Podhale
The Tatra Museum in Zakopane is one of the oldest and largest regional museums in Poland. This institution has been cultivating and promoting the unique and extremely rich cultural heritage of Podhale and its inhabitants for over 130 years. The museum presents exhibitions introducing visitors to the history of the region, highlander tradition and the nature of the Tatra Mountains, ans by presenting works of art by artists associated with Zakopane.
From 2023, after intensive renovation and conservation works, one can admire the new version of the Tatra Museum – all with financial support from European Funds. The following have been renovated (both inside and outside):
- The main building of the Tatra Museum (designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz) – in the historic interiors, the original wooden doorframes to the permanent exhibition rooms, the old staircase with wrought iron railings were renovated, the stone benches at the entrance were recreated, and the reception space was stylistically unified with the other branches of the museum. The building includes temporary exhibition rooms, space for arranging a café, and educational and conference rooms. Permanent exhibitions: ethnographic, geological and natural were modernized.
- Kornel Makuszyński Museum in the Opolanka villa – the building was insulated and the woodwork was renovated, including the construction of new external wings. Moreover, a new reception desk was designed in the same style as the other branches of the museum. The permanent exhibition space was changed – additional educational and exhibition spaces were created, and the storage area in the basement was modernized.
- Kulczycki Art Gallery– the building structure was strengthened and the roof covering was replaced. In the historic interiors, the historic bathtub of Józef Cyrankiewicz, parquet floors, beautiful stucco on the ceilings and original chandeliers have been preserved. Thanks to obtaining new usable space in the basement and attic of the building, it was possible to move the scientific and administrative headquarters, library and reading room with archives (scientific and photographic), as well as warehouses, from the main building of the Tatra Museum.
In all three cases, the works included insulating the foundations, refreshing the façade, installing an elevator, modernizing technical installations and developing the surrounding area. All the above changes took into account the needs of people with disabilities and with particular emphasis on the needs of the youngest users.
