GEO-3EM complex – ENERGY ECOLOGY EDUCATION
The GEO-3EM – ENERGY ECOLOGY EDUCATION complex of Wrocław University of Science and Technology is a research and technology transfer centre, which is unique on a European scale. Its construction cost over PLN 100 million, and a large part of the funds came from the EU subsidy. The building has R&D infrastructure located in twelve laboratories of the following five faculties of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology: Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Electronics, Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology, and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. GEO-3EM will be used to carry out research and development works focused on strategic areas for Lower Silesia, such as: spatial mobility, natural and secondary raw materials, production of machinery and equipment, and material processing. Specialized laboratory equipment is valuable for two reasons. First of all, most of the funds dedicated for the construction of the complex were spent on the purchase of equipment, and second of all – more importantly – there are only single pieces of many devices and apparatus in Poland. Due to such technical background, Wrocław scientists have the opportunity to conduct research with the highest standards. GEO-3EM workrooms that are not available every day include:
- laboratory for nano- and microstructure tests of composite materials and engineering constructions, where, for example, testing of samples of building materials, their composition and appearance, including their structure, is carried out. These tests can be used to determine the quality and durability or to check internal damages of, for example, concrete or asphalt,
- a laboratory of sensors for intelligent objects and data transfer systems, where devices used, for example, in medicine to monitor the patient’s condition, and in mines – to detect dangerous methane, are tested,
- accredited conveyor belt laboratory, in which there are three unique, large, research stations (including one entirely authorial, created by scientists from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology), related to the study of the durability of conveyor belts, where their durability is checked,
- a laboratory for hydrometallurgical processes, in which new technologies for the preparation of metals from ores and processes for their recycling are developed, e.g. neodymium magnets from our old computers,
- vehicle dynamics and safety laboratory, in which the most interesting element is the car simulator. This truck cabin together with the surroundings (screen on which the film imitating the road is displayed) is used for detailed examination of the drivers’ reactions to traffic incidents.
Construction of the complex began in December 2017 and lasted until November 2018. As a result, a three-story building adapted to the needs of people with disabilities was constructed. GEO-3EM is located at ul. Na Grobli 13, in the vicinity of the „Polinka” cableway station and the educational and research complex Geocentrum opened in December 2012, which was also co-financed from the European Union funds.
