Revitalisation of the market square in Żmigród to give it a representative and centre-creating function
Park&ride interchange station at the PKP railway station, biodiversity gardens on Sąsiecznica, reconstruction of the „Zielona Dolina” kindergarten and equipment for mathematics and natural science rooms in schools – these are just some of the tasks implemented by Żmigród thanks to EU subsidies. However, the most spectacular investment of recent years for which the municipality has obtained EU funds is the revitalisation of the market square, restoring its historic layout and an honorary place in the „heart of the town”.
A new market square in Żmigród was constructed two years ago. The investment included reconstruction of the surface of the square and neighbouring roads, installation of new lighting and monitoring system, installation of elements of small architecture such as benches and a fountain, and planting of decorative plants. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has special significance for the inhabitants of Żmigród, has also been renewed. The column dates from the second half of the 19th century and is a remnant of the so-called victory column, build after the triumph of Prussia in the war with France. At that time, on its top there was an eagle, replaced after World War II with the statue of the Mother of God, which was brought by the sisters of Charity from Chortkiv (today a city in Ukraine). In 1947, the statue was consecrated and the town was entrusted under Her protection.
A very important element of revitalisation was emphasising the representative function of the Żmigród market square and adapting it to an organisation of various outdoor events: cultural, historical, religious, educational or trade events (fairs, temporary stands with regional products), as well as important celebrations for the local community. Therefore, part of the money was allocated to the purchase of equipment necessary to carry out such events, e.g. exhibition boards, external display, mobile stage. Such events as Christmas and Easter markets have already been organised in the market square.
Żmigród is located on the rivers Barycza and Sąsiecznica. It has 6.5 thousand inhabitants. The town was first mentioned in the Wroclaw Bull of 1155, and its name comes from two Polish words: viper (żmija) and town (gród) (viper town). Some claim that the word ‚viper’ is an old Polish term for a dragon, which is in the town’s coat of arms.
