Adaptation and renovation of the Monument of History – the Silver Mountain Fortress for museum and tourism purposes, including creation of the new didactic trail within the presently inaccessible parts of the fortress
The Silver Mountain Fortress is one of the more significant military attractions in the Lower Silesia and it is considered to be the largest mountain fortress in Europe. Its origins – second half of the XVIII-th century – it belonged to the most modern facilities of this sort of fortifications. Special admiration was raised by a significant donjon (tower that combines residential and defensive functions) as well as forts and bastions. Tremendous storerooms, wells, chapel, prison, hospital, bakeries, brewery, craft workshops and a powder mill have contributed to complete independence and autonomy of the fort. As many as 4 thousand soldiers could fit inside further to substantial volumes of stocks of ammunition, firewood and food supplies. The authorities of Stoszowice, the area host, managed to father funds already in the previous EU budgeting period, enabling the conduct of adaptation of part of premises of donjon with a designation for museum-exposition purposes. Further works could be recommenced post a subsequent injection of EU funds.
At present, thanks to obtaining the funds, a number of renovation-construction works related to restoring and securing the facility could be performed, enabling access to formerly inaccessible buildings of the fortress and expanding the visitor route in a way that facilitates walking through the entire external ring of the fortress. Furthermore, subsequent rooms could be renovated thanks to which such elements of equipment as the kitchen, tiled stove, scoop wheel of the well or the underground bascule bridge could be restored. Exploitation devices allowing for presentation of the system of fortress artillery were installed as well as modern toilets and the facility was connected to the communal sewerage network. The Silver Fortress has the status of history monument and belongs to the Lower Silesian “Industrial Technology Heritage Trail”.
