The renovation of the church in the Szczytnicki Park in Wroclaw
The renovation of the larch church in the Szczytnicki Park took four years. As a result, Wrocław gained a new space for various types of cultural and artistic activities, and the monument that had been deteriorating was not degraded. History of the St. John of Nepomuk church is quite unusual. The sixteenth-century temple is a work of a carpenter from Stare Koźle in Upper Silesia and was initially located there. Then it was moved to Kędzierzyn, and in 1913 it came to Wrocław. A well-known architect Theo Effenberger was the organizer of the relocation of the church was and he managed demolition works, assembly and development of the area around the building. On the occasion of the Centenary Exhibition, which is to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig and the opening of the Centennial Hall, the church has become part of the exhibition on garden and cemetery art. It became famous again in the 1950s, when it turned out that rolled-up valuable paintings of Matejko, Kossak and Gierymski, previously stolen from the National Museum in Wrocław, were found in the church behind the altar, in a double ceiling. Other hosts – incl. Our Lady of Consolation parish or PTTK branch – they cared for ongoing renovations rather than comprehensive revitalization. Time and changing weather conditions have done their part. Despite entering in the register of monuments, the building was out of service for years. But it changed now. Due to the subsidy from the European Union, actions were taken to restore the church to its former glory. The work included renovation of the roof, walls, tower, interior of the building, replacement of installations, as well as development of the surrounding area. The facility has fire protection, as well as adequate sound system, reflectors and audio-visual equipment. It houses about 50 people, so each artistic event is of intimate nature. For both artists and visitors, the use of the new cultural space in the Szczytnicki Park is free of charge.
