Upgrading the street light system in the City of Zamość
Zamość authorities spent almost PLN 3.9 million to improve air quality in the city. The project launched to achieve this goal has led to reduced levels of pollution that is particularly harmful to the quality of life – i.e. so-called low-altitude emissions. Most of the money came from EU Funds.
The project aimed to improve the energy efficiency of street lights. Its scope included:
- replacement of existing energy-saving light fixtures providing lighting on Hrubieszowska, Jana Pawła II, J. Piłsudskiego, Legionów, Lipskiej, Lubelskiej, Lwowskiej, Partyzantów, Powiatowej and Sikorskiego Streets;
- installation of PV systems on Ordynacji Zamojskiej and Honorowych Dawców Krwi roundabouts.
These measures helped to reduce electricity demand generated by street lights, leading to a substantial decrease in lighting costs. Users now benefit from a clearly better quality of street lighting and can feel more safe. The project also contributed to achieving important environmental objectives – reducing dust pollution and emissions of harmful substances. The project is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 210 tonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent annually.
The main work packages carried out as part of the project:
- replacement of 1,245 light fixtures;
- replacement of 1,245 lights with energy-saving lights;
- installation of 10 PV panel poles to produce RES energy to provide lighting on two roundabouts.
