Capable of Pomerania
Gifted students from Pomerania Support for students with special abilities in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics and social competences (incl. humanities). Comprehensive system of the gifted students’ support was introduced in Pomeranian region in 2010 by the Office of the Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, thanks to the funding from European Social Fund. Project “Gifted students from Pomerania” is dedicated to the most talented students from the last grades of the primary schools and from the secondary schools in our region. Statistically 3-5 percent of children in the whole population demonstrates an exceptional talent in some field. It is believed, however, that “gifted students will do somehow on their own”. We believe that “somehow“ is not enough and therefore we are offering many enrichment activities in the project.
Traditional forms of support for talented students used in the Polish educational system are mainly: scholarships and the system of contests and competitions. Nevertheless, those are limited to an insignificant number of schools, which actually work with talented students, focusing solely on preparing them for winning the contests. The majority of schools either overlook or neglect gifted students. The comprehensive support system for gifted students in Pomerania is functioning within the current legal basis and was built using existing institutions. In each of the counties there is designated school or psychological and pedagogical advisory centre, acting under the name “Local Creative Teaching Centre”, offering support for gifted students.
The system of the gifted students’ support consists of the following elements, which are implemented within the projects: 1) a regional program and partnerships to support gifted students, 2) a network of creative teaching centres, 3) a system of diagnosis and recruitment of talented students, 4) the forms of support for gifted students, for example: a) extracurricular activities, b) academic workshops (special classes at the universities), c) individual academic mentorship, d) individual and group contests, e) psychological support, f) science camps, g) scholarships, 5) courses and training for teachers working with the gifted students, 6) an educational web portal with an e-learning platform.
Every school year about 2000 students take part in the program and have the opportunity to further develop their exceptional talents in science and humanities.
