perspective
2014 - 2020

The project consists of expansion of the Hospital of St Wojciech in Gdańsk located in Jana Pawła II Avenue (part of Copernic Healthcare Provider Sp. Z o.o.) involving addition of a three-storey building with accompanying technical infrastructure and development of the surrounding area. The building will be equipped with an Operating Unit consisting of 8 operating theatres and one Recovery Room. The building will also house two departments – Dept. of Urology and Dept. of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

The project also anticipates purchase of medical and non-medical equipment, such as furniture.

The investment will cost almost PLN 83.3 million and EU financing with the funds from the Regional Operational Programme for the Pomorskie Voivodeship 2014-2020 will amount to nearly PLN 47 million. Co-financing with the funds from Pomorskie Voivodeship amounts to PLN 35.1 mln.

Aim of the project:

The objective of the project is improvement in access to high quality specialist health care by the Pomorze residents, especially those suffering from “diseases of civilization”, such as tumours, musculoskeletal disorders, vascular diseases, circulatory system diseases, urological disorders, gynaecological disorders as well as gastrointestinal disorders and others.

As a result of the project’s implementation conditions will be created that are conducive for delivery of health care services adequate to specified needs, including correcting the infrastructure deficits with regard to health care facilities.

The project will contribute to proper functioning of the network of referring healthcare facilities in terms of departments of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

Why is the expansion necessary?

According to the data provided in the “Maps of the Pomorskie Voivodeship healthcare needs in terms of hospital healthcare” the utilisation of existing operating tables in a hospital is very high and much higher than the national average and the other voivodeships average. On the average, per one operating table, there are 840 operations being performed annually, that is 186 (28.44%) more than the average in Poland. Hospital infections in the regions also exceed the national average. In 2014 in the Pomorskie Voivodeship the value of the Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI) Coefficient was approximately 1.17%, which is higher than the national average for Poland. The value of this indicator was the fourth highest value in Poland (the average value of this coefficient is 0.93%).

Hospital of St Wojciech is the third largest hospital in Gdańsk and in the Voivodeship. The present Operating Unit, that has been in use for 34 years since 2019, has reached the end of its useful service life, and in its current deteriorated sanitary-technical condition does not comply with existing standards, and hence, without a refurbishment it is in danger of having to close down in the future. The renovation of the existing Operating Unit in its present location is not possible without its complete exclusion from usage, along with adjoining departments and interconnecting access routes. Apart from the existing Operating Unit not meeting the sanitary–epidemiological requirements, it is also necessary to adapt it to comply with the applicable mandatory legislation, incl. fire regulations.

The current Department of Intensive Cardiac Therapy lacks modern equipment and necessary facilities for performing invasive surgical procedures. A similar situation can be found at the Department of Urology, and Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

The medical equipment of the abovementioned departments and the Operating Unit is old and worn-out. Adequate specialist medical equipment is indispensable to health service delivery, reduction of post-surgery complications, drop in patient mortality rates, shortening a patient’s hospital stay as well as a reduction in Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAI’s).

Without an Operating Unit a delivery of hospital health services is not possible in such departments as: surgery, urology, trauma and orthopaedic surgery, paediatric cardiac surgery, cardiac surgery intensive care unit (SICU) and gynaecology. At present more than 10 000 surgical procedures are being performed in the Operating Unit. More than 55% surgical procedures performed currently, involve “diseases of civilization”, and especially oncological diseases. At present, delivery of complicated procedures in the voivodeship is scattered between smaller health facilities, which may reduce the success of treatment and increase the global costs. The delivery of healthcare services is thus compromised. Statistical data as well as Priorities for Regional Health Policy (PRPZ) indicate unequivocally that the number of surgical procedures will grow, which means that access to services has to increase in order to satisfy the needs of patients, in line with 21st c standards.

Advantages resulting from extension of the hospital building

The project implementation will reduce the social risk caused by being unfit for work due to illness, which diminishes the income of households while increasing the costs of living. Reduction of poverty levels among the residents.

Improvement in the comfort of patients and their families. Reduction in the death rate due to “lifestyle diseases or “diseases of civilization” Reduction in the number of issued medical certificates of incapacity for work due to following diseases: tumours, musculoskeletal disorders, heart and vascular diseases.

Modern medical treatments will shorten the duration of hospitalisation and accelerate reconvalescence. Shortening of hospitalisation will reduce the costs of medical therapy and increase efficiency of the new infrastructure. In this way the waiting period for medical service delivery at the hospital will be shortened. A more efficient and faster medical treatment has an influence on employment continuity of residents.

The project implementation will affect on the average 600 000 patients.

31 000 hospitalisations as of 2020 (in 2016 the number of hospitalisations came to 29 647)

Of the 35 000 hospitalisations in 2034, 70% will constitute “diseases of civilization”.

65% -70% of those receiving treatment from 2025 – will suffer from “diseases of civilization”.

The estimated number of surgical treatments in the period 2020-2034 – 140 982 (General Surgery 29 866, Urology 31 228, Orthopaedics 33 025, Gynaecology 29 213, Paediatric cardiology and invasive cardiology 4 268). The number of surgical procedures that will involve “diseases of civilization” has been estimated for this period to reach 92 397 – 65%.
