perspective
2014 - 2020

The project concerned the renovation, conservation and making available the interior of the historic Church of Our Lady in Summo and the construction of the exhibition of Mieszko I’s Palatium together with the Dobrawa Chapel on Ostrów Tumski in Poznan. The term “in summon” refers to the location of the church – “on a bulkhead”. It stands in the heart of the former Piast stronghold, on the site of the prince’s residence. During archaeological excavations, relics of Mieszko I’s residence (palatium) and the chapel of Duchess Dobrawa were found.

Three entities participated in the project: the Archdiocese of Poznan, the City of Poznan and the Archaeological Museum in Poznan. The works included land development and the creation of an information system covering the entire area of Ostrów Tumski. The historical course of the embankments of the Poznan stronghold was also mapped. As part of the project, a traditional and multimedia exhibition of relics was made in the Palatium and the Dobrawa chapel inside and outside the Church of Our Lady in Summo, along with an exhibition of archaeological monuments and an educational program in the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve. In the Reserve you can see archaeological excavations with fragments of wooden and earth embankments made from more than 30,000 oak logs. The exhibition also includes archaeological monuments discovered in the Poznan cathedral and the Mieszko I’s palatium. The exhibition is modern and uses, among others, holographic technologies and videomapping.

The investment also included comprehensive conservation and renovation of the interior and movable monuments from the interior of the church of Our Lady in Summo, as well as securing the church against theft and destruction.

Work on the historic floor was preceded by archaeological research. As part of the project, activities were also carried out to make the facility and exhibition accessible for people with disabilities. Construction and conservation works were carried out under the supervision of an inspector (including conservation and archaeological supervision) and, due to the historic nature of the building and the area, by a representative of the Municipal Conservator of Monuments in Poznan. Based on the infrastructure as part of the project created, a specific educational and cultural program can be implemented.
