perspective
2014 - 2020

Political & cultural interrelations connect the South Baltic area since centuries. Various changes of country boundaries (e.g. Rügen island / DE > Danish 1168 -1325, Vorpommern / DE & Zachodniop. / PL > Swedish 1648 – 1815, Klaipeda Region / LT & Pomorskie / PL > Prussian until 1919 / 1945, Skane / SE > Danish until 1658) led to manifold links between the regions. Testimonies for them are mansions and manor houses. Many of them document the area`s common heritage in their architecture and unique histories. // A joint and more intensive touristic valorization of the manors in the South Baltic can address the following potentials: (1) As genuine “cross-border monuments”, they can be suitable focal points for jointly promoting the South Baltic area as a tourism destination. (2) Manors houses are located in rural hinterland of the tourism hotspots (cities, coastal areas) so that better utilization for recreation can contribute to levelling out tourism intensity in the SBA. (3) They can be used for kinds of tourism that prolong the season (e.g. health & spa tourism, culture tourism & events). (4) Their scattered locations across the entire South Baltic area predestines them for integration in cross-border tourism trails & tours of different kinds (e.g. bike trails, motorcycle trails, bus excursions etc.). // There exists a broad range of approaches and – positive and negative – experiences related to the touristic valorisation of manor houses in the SBA. Combining & advancing them within cross-border cooperation may create innovative solutions. As the topic has not been tackled within South Baltic cross-border cooperation yet, it is necessary to first have a deeper and more systematic look at starting points and potentials across the region. This should be done within South Baltic Manor EXPLORES, in order to create the basis for an implementation-oriented main project that is able to generate immediate effects for the tourism development in the South Baltic area.
