Reconstruction and development of the Youth Astronomical Observatory
By the initiative of a local photographer, Zdzisław Słowik the Municipal Observation Station of the Polish Astronomy Association was established in Niepołomice in 1964. It gave rise to the Youth Astronomical Observatory which operates today. In 2021, the Observatory received modern premises, constructed through co-financing under EU funds.
The new base was built in exactly the same location, at Kopernika Street, replacing the demolished buildings where the observatory had previously operated. The renovated planetarium is all that remained of the old facility.
The single-storey complex with two additional storeys of the dome was designed using the local topography, and part of it is covered with the so-called green roof. The base houses a lecture hall, teaching and administrative rooms and accommodation. The surroundings of the building have also been developed.
The new headquarters of the observatory allow it to comfortably host educational activities and all-night sky observations.
