Improvement of flood safety in the Biała Tarnowska river basin - phase II
The investment is complementary to the project involving the launch in 2014 of Electronic Flood Warning System informing about the time and place of occurrence of flood risk and its scale for towns lying in the catchment area of the Biała Tarnowska River.
Thanks to the functioning of the system, the inhabitants of communes in the Tarnów, Gorlice and Nowy Sącz districts, which joined the project, are informed about flood risks, which allows to limit flood losses.
The existing warning system, which relied on limited infrastructure, was expanded to improve flood safety. It was equipped with water level measuring stations at the mouths of the main tributaries of the Biała, comprehensive software for the Local Flood Warning System was developed, and a local radar station was built along with a local weather radar to generate flash flood warnings. This most modern meteorological radar in Poland is located in Falkowa. The device covers an area with a radius of approximately 70 kilometres.
The purpose of the system is to support early decision-making in the face of flood risk for inhabitants and representatives of emergency services based on a forecast up to 48 hours (floods of the river and its tributaries) and a short-term forecast (heavy rainfall and associated flash floods).
